A client came to us looking for a way to beautify their space. One wall in particular at their loft was causing some headaches. They knew they wanted to incorporate visual design, as well as distract from the very large ducting above their living room- but they weren't sure how. Here's a "before" photo:
To come up with a solution, our Interior Design team looked to the building's past. We brainstormed a few different options, including custom decorative trim on the walls:
And we also looked at art doors with painted walls:
But, ultimately, we landed on a more industrial feel that would complement the building's rich history.
Building 361, the Steam Plant, opened in 1940. It was built to heat 35 of Lowry’s buildings by providing steam heat through a series of underground tunnels and pipes. Its four large boilers were fueled with coal that was delivered on railroad tracks along 6th Avenue on the east side of the base.
Our design for the accent wall was inspired by the underground tunnels and pipes of the steam plant. Incorporating industrial materials and the curved elements the feature wall is a nod to the history of the building and complements the industrial style of the converted steam plant.
You can see our proposed design renders here:
The scope of work boiled down to (see what we did there?):
Design, Fabrication and Installation of custom decorative metal screen
Design, Fabrication and Installation of decorative aluminum cladding on exiting doors
Replace Door Hardware
Cover or replace trim around doors with metal trim
We also had to figure out how to attach the doors and the decorative screen to be durable and attractive. Luckily, our guys are really, really good at just that!
Here's the final design and install:
We're really proud of the end result, and most importantly- the client is thrilled with their new look and feel.
